Radio Telemetry

Radio telemetry, especially de-licensed, was an early method used by the UK water industry and other utilities from the 1980’s to remotely monitor assets such as reservoir levels, pump status and more.

With radio telemetry, there are no ongoing data costs and there is no reliance on an external infrastructure.

Whilst there are many other technologies available, radio telemetry can be the most reliable and practical alternative for specific remote monitoring applications.

Sigfox

Sigfox is the most widely deployed proprietary LPWAN low-power wide-area network technology, with networks in around 60 countries and covering 95% of the UK population.

Powelectrics are Sigfox partners and offer a range of Sigfox devices that are battery powered, weatherproof and incredibly easy to deploy. For more information, please click the links below:

Typical Sigfox applications include remote electricity, water and gas meter reading for billing and waste/leakage detection. Sigfox is also used for temperature and humidity monitoring and a broad range of pulse counting and contact counting applications, including people counting and trespass alerts.

Typically, a Sigfox battery lasts up to 10 years, for readings every 2 hours, depending on the amount of energy required by the sensor(s). Data can be sent every 10 minutes if required by the application, although daily readings are more common, greatly extending battery life.

Powelectrics have fully integrated Sigfox telemetry into our MetronView cloud.

WiFi

Powelectrics can offer wi-fi solutions for situations involving multiple sensors that are fairly close together or where it is not practical to cable.

Sensors can connect to a hub via wi-fi or LoRa or be wired using ethernet, analogue, RS232 or RS485. Data can be transmitted by wi-fi, ethernet or using cellular networks.

Powelectrics have integrated wi-fi into our MetronView cloud.

LoRa

LoRa/LoRaWAN stands for Long Range Radio and offers a longer range than wi-fi.

LoRa requires you to build your own network, unless there is already one in your locality to subscribe to. A wide range of mostly battery-powered sensors are available to add to your network and a single gateway can communicate with several hundred thousand devices several miles away, even penetrating buildings.

There are restrictions on packet sizes and how often units can transmit. LoRa is being discussed in relation to SMART cities, where councils or water companies, for example, want to monitor many devices. For them, it is a great investment to install some base stations and avoid ongoing license fees.

Powelectrics have integrated LoRa into our MetronView cloud.

Remote Condition Monitoring

Remote condition monitoring uses the Internet of Things to monitor key aspects of a process and identify poor performance, so that action can be taken before safety, security or productivity is compromised.

Condition-based monitoring can prevent costly stoppages by identifying the need for maintenance before a breakdown or incident occurs.

Many Powelectrics’ customers offer remote condition monitoring as a value-added service or differentiator to win and retain business by offering enhanced service levels. Examples of Powelectrics solutions delivered include:

Tank Level Monitoring / Vendor Managed Inventory

Powelectrics IIoT solutions are currently monitoring thousands of tank and silo levels around the world. Our technology can accommodate any shape or size of tank. Contents may be liquid, gas, powder or granules.

Remote tank level monitoring helps to significantly reduce bulk distribution costs, because efficient logistics can be planned. Service and supply contracts can be won by offering enhanced service levels to end-user, helping them eliminate run-outs and overspills.

Remote Inventory Management/ Vendor Managed Inventory/ VMI is the use of remote level monitoring technology to report level of any type of substance (diesel, petrol, home heating oil, kerosene, biofuels, lubricants, coolants, cryogas, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, foodstuffs, animal feed, water, construction additives, AdBlue and waste). The data is then used to plan efficient logistics and ensure customers do not run-out or overspill, with all the associated consequences, such as stopped production and clean-up costs.

Powelectrics Tank Monitoring System (MetronTMS) is a platform specifically for customers who deliver/collect gases, liquids, powders or granules to/from their customers’ tanks in bulk.

Please see our Tank Level Monitoring/Vendor Managed Inventory brochure here.
