Thermocouples, PT100’S And PT1000’S

PowTechnology offer you 30 years’ experience recommending and supplying sensors. We work with over a hundred quality international manufacturers and offer a wide range of temperature sensors including thermocouples and PT100s. They are all common in the process industry and available in a wide range of packages with different fitting types.

PowTechnology offer a wide range of temperature sensors including thermocouples, PT100s and PT1000s. Both are common in the process industry and available in a wide range of packages with different fitting types.

PT1000’S AND PT1000S

PT100’s and PT1000s are RTD’s or ‘Resistance Temperature Detectors’. The resistance depends on temperature. RTD sensors are most commonly made from platinum, copper, nickel alloys or various metal oxides.

Platinum is the most common material for RTD sensors, as the relationship between temperature and resistance is reliable, repeatable and linear RTD sensors made of platinum are called PRT, ‘Platinum Resistance Thermometers’. The most common platinum PRT sensor, we tend to see is the PT100 sensor they have a resistance of 100 ohms at 0°C (32°F).

THERMOCOUPLES

Thermocouples are made from two dissimilar metal wires which are joined at one end. The junction of these 2 dissimilar metals creates a small voltage, which varies with temperature. They suit high temperatures and are robust, but extension cables need to be made from suitable materials, so there aren’t lots of junctions of dissimilar metals. As the signals are small then noise can be a problem.

WHICH ONE TO USE?

PT100’s are more accurate than thermocouples. They do not require cold junction compensation and their extension cables can be made from copper. They are less robust and tend to be more expensive than thermocouples.

Signals from PT100’s and Thermocouples are often converted to 4-20mA to make them compatible with connected devices, such as PowTechnology Metron4 telemetry device, which reports sensor data to the cloud at user defined intervals and send alerts if values fall outside user-defined parameters.

These products are normally made to order, to suit each customers’ application. The most common types we supply are:

SURFACE THERMOCOUPLES, PT100’S & PT1000S

These can be a leaf (shin), band (like a jubilee clip) and washer as J, K, T or N type thermocouples, or PT100 & PT1000’s as 2, 3 or 4 wire.

We can offer with various cable types including PVC (-10 to +150°C), PFA (-50 to +250°C), Fibreglass (-50 to +350°C) or Fibreglass with a stainless steel over-braid (-50 to +350°C).

TUBULAR THERMOCOUPLES, PT100’s & PT1000S

These are usually inserted into a solid block or an enclosed area. We can supply with length of cable, a head for a transmitter to be fitted in, and with a range of process connections, both imperial and metric. The sensing elements can be J, K, T or N type thermocouples, or PT100 & PT1000’s as 2, 3 or 4 wire.
